Ana: How was your trip to Russia?
Lara: It was amazing! I really enjoyed it.
Ana: Where did you go?
Lara: I flew to Moscow first and then I took a train to St Petersburg.
Ana: What was Moscow like?
Lara: Well, I thought it was so interesting to walk into Red Square and to see St Basil’s Cathedral, there in front of you with its brightly coloured onion domes. And then just to walk to the Bolshoi Theatre, which is a very elegant building, is thrilling.
Ana: Is it a very busy place?
Lara: Yes, unfortunately it is. The streets are crowded. There’s a lot of traffic and there are loads of traffic jams, so it’s very congested and much more polluted than St Petersburg. However, it’s easy to get around in Moscow by metro. There are 16 metro lines and 256 stops.
Ana: Wow! So you saw quite a lot of the city.
Lara: Well, I was only there for three days and there was so much more to see.
Ana: And what did you think of St Petersburg?
Lara: I think it’s a more attractive city than Moscow. People say it’s as beautiful as Venice, with its canals and elegant buildings, so they call it ‘The Venice of the North’.
Ana: Oh, I didn’t know it had canals.
Lara: You can go on trips on the canals. There’s also a metro but it’s much smaller than the metro in Moscow. There are only five lines. It’s easier to find your way around in St Petersburg because quite a lot of the signs are in English.
Ana: Is it busy?
Lara: It’s not as busy as Moscow. To me, it seemed quieter and calmer than Moscow. I think it’s friendlier too. And it’s not as expensive as Moscow.
Ana: What did you see in St Petersburg?
Lara: I went to the Winter Palace, which was built by Peter the Great and then extended by Catherine the Great. It’s absolutely stunning and very grand. There are huge rooms with marble pillars and chandeliers. It’s more impressive than anything I saw in Moscow.
Ana: It sounds like a fantastic trip.
Lara: Yes, it was. I loved St Petersburg and I managed to see nearly everything in the two days I was there
